What is the disadvantage of using ships to transport goods?
It takes a long time to move goods via ship. It works out well for bulky goods that are not perishable or time critical.
Plus if you work as crew; with journey durations sometimes lasting a month or two and with nothing but endless ocean from horizon to horizon; then you'd better get used to the monotony of eating 'fish and ships' all the time.
